🧙♂️ Plot Summary
Set in a mythical version of feudal Japan, the story revolves around Kubo, a young boy with only one eye. Here are the key elements:
Kubo lives with his mother, Sariatu, who is often ill. He tells stories using a magical shamisen (a stringed instrument), and animates origami figures to help entertain and earn a living.
He is warned not to be out after dark because his aunts (the twin sisters, Karasu and Washi), and also his grandfather — the Moon King — are hunting him, aiming to take his remaining eye.
After a dangerous encounter, Kubo sets out on a quest to find his father's magical armor, which is the only thing that can protect him. He is joined by two companions: Monkey (who also has family ties and magical background) and Beetle, a warrior who has lost his memory.
Throughout the journey, Kubo learns truths about his family, the power of memory, sacrifice, and identity. In confronting the Moon King, the themes of remembering versus forgetting, and what it means to be human, are central.
