🧩 Plot Summary

Here’s what happens in John Wick: Chapter 2 (spoiler-light but some points):

After the events of John Wick (2014), John has regained his car and is trying to go back into a quiet life.

Santino D’Antonio, an Italian crime boss, comes calling with a marker — a blood oath John had given him in the past. Santino wants John to carry out a hit on Santino’s sister, Gianna, so that Santino can claim her seat at the High Table (the powerful council of crime bosses).

John initially refuses but when Santino destroys his house, John is forced to honor the marker.

The mission takes John to Rome. While there, he infiltrates a party to reach Gianna. Gianna, facing her fate, cuts her own throat rather than have John kill her outright.

After Gianna's death, John fights his way out but is betrayed by Santino, who sent others (led by Ares) to kill John to cover his tracks.

John returns to New York. At the Continental, he kills Santino despite being warned that no “business” (i.e. killing) may happen on Continental grounds. This violation results in John being declared excommunicado by the underworld's High Table. All resources, safe-havens, and privileges are revoked. However, Winston delays the effective time by one hour and gives John some time/favor before the excommunication fully takes effect.

📚 World & Mythology Expansion

This sequel deepens the lore of the John Wick universe: the rules of the Continental, the marker system, the High Table, etc.

We see more global scope (e.g. Rome, Italian criminal organizations) and a higher scale of conflict than in the first movie.

👍 Reception

Critics’ Reviews: Very positive. Rotten Tomatoes gives an 89% approval rating. The consensus praises it for upping the action, pushing the mythos of the series, and being a worthy sequel.

What people liked: Action choreography, visual style, escalating stakes, Keanu Reeves’ performance.
