🧩 Plot Summary

Here’s the main storyline (spoiler‐light):

John Wick (Keanu Reeves) is a retired hitman who has left the criminal world. His wife, Helen, recently died, leaving him grief-stricken. Before she died, she arranged for a puppy (named Daisy) to be sent to John, to help him cope.

John begins to recover, finding emotional solace in the puppy and returning somewhat to normalcy. He also has a vintage 1969 Ford Mustang that was very dear to him.

A young man named Iosef Tarasov (son of crime lord Viggo Tarasov) becomes interested in John’s car. After John refuses to sell, Iosef later breaks into John’s house, kills the puppy, and steals the car. This horrific act drags John back into the violent world he wanted to leave behind.

John embarks on a ruthless quest for vengeance, going after Iosef. Viggo, realizing John’s capacity for violence and his reputation, tries to protect his son, leading to escalating conflict.

The movie also introduces the underworld of assassins with its own codes and rules—e.g. the Continental Hotel as a neutral ground, markers, etc. John uses his old‐skills, resourcefulness, and determination to exact justice.

🎭 Characters & Themes

Characters:

John Wick: a legendary assassin, haunted by loss, seeking peace, but brought back by grief and betrayal.

Helen: John’s wife whose death triggers much of the emotion in the story.

Iosef Tarasov: arrogant young man; his actions set the plot in motion.

Viggo Tarasov: Iosef’s father, powerful crime lord; conflicted between protecting his son and dealing with John’s retribution.

Themes:

Grief and Loss: John’s actions are deeply tied to his sorrow over losing his wife.

Revenge and Consequence: What happens when someone who left a life of violence is forced back, and how far vengeance can go.

Code and Honor: Despite being in the crime/assassin underworld, there are rules (e.g. the Continental’s neutral ground, the “marker” system) that add depth to the world.

Identity and Redemption: John Wick’s struggle to leave behind who he was and whether peace is possible.

👍 Reception & Legacy

Critics responded very positively. On Rotten Tomatoes, it has about 86% Tomatometer.

It was praised for its action choreography, style, camerawork, and Keanu Reeves’ performance. Also for its emotional grounding, rather than being action for action’s sake.

The film exceeded expectations given its relatively modest budget, becoming a sleeper hit and launching a successful franchise.
